Thanks for the replies guys! Sorry I'm still quite new to this, excuse my ignorance please: i) If almost all the coins have been mined, what is the incentive for miners to keep mining VIA to provide computing power for the PoW? Does VIA operate on proof of work.?) ii) Even though there are only minimal coins unmined, if these are all, say, mined by one or two large mining operations, then doesn't that still concentrate power in the hands of a few? Then in the case of a VIA fork, these miners will be the ones with all the voting power? • • • • • • •. I) If almost all the coins have been mined, what is the incentive for miners to keep mining VIA to provide computing power for the PoW? Does VIA operate on proof of work.?) Yes Viacoin uses Scrypt which is PoW, the same as Litecoin.
Viacoin uses Auxillary Proof of Work (AuxPoW), or Merged Mining, this means that Viacoin can be mined in conjunction with any other Scrypt coin without affecting the hashrate of either coin. I believe the majority of the pools mine Litecoin with Viacoin. As this is the case there's no real incentive to not mine Viacoin as it is essence, mined for 'free'. As far as I know block rewards will not end until 2040 but you may need to look that up.

Then in the case of a VIA fork, these miners will be the ones with all the voting power? Currently there are several mining pools that mine Viacoin that I'm aware of. I know a large portion of mining is done by F2Pool which is run by Wang Chun, who is the past has worked co-cooperatively with Romano (Lead Dev) to implement SegWit.
As far as I am aware that will put the hash of Viacoin in the hands of a few but it will also make it difficult for Viacoin to be attacked because of the high hashrate these pools offer (unless in the case the pools decide to be malicious and attack Viacoin themselves). This does mean the miners will have strong voting power but at the same time the relationship between the Dev's and Miners seem to be very cemented so an undesirable fork, in my opinion, is very unlikely. • • • • • • •.
